A trip to the Zero Waste Zone

It was nice that the weather was so nice when we went on the trip to the Zero Waste Zone last Thursday. We were very lucky to have so many parent helpers and our tamariki were very excited to share this experience with their dads and mums.

All of our children enjoyed the big bus on the way, exploring the outside world from preschool with their friends. After we had a warm welcome from Sarah and Rosie (the staffs at Zero Waste), we had a picnic morning tea.

Sarah introduced our students to creative up-cycling and our tamariki were very engaged and concentrated during the demonstration. We then did a fun activity to sort rubbish out into different bins by using our new-learned recycling knowledge. It was surprising that so many things could be recycled rather than filling our mother earth’s tummy.

It was a great opportunity for our tamariki to know that the food scraps can be eaten by worms to produce worm tea for gardening. All of our tamariki had a very close look at the worms with the magnifiers in the worm farm.

Before we headed back to school, we enjoyed the bus tour around the site, exploring how diffrent types of waste is managed at the factory.

We will follow up what our tamariki learned from this trip. Our hope is that our tamariki will start to understand how we can produce less rubbish in our daily lives and take some responsibility towards looking after our living environment :) Aroha, Summer.
