Magic Milk

This morning, we did a science experiment called “Magic Milk” at Montessori. The children were very fascinated with the name of this experiment. They were also very excited and curiously waited for this experiment to begin. The materials we used for this experiment were milk, dish washing liquid, red, blue, green food colouring and a dish. The children all gathered around at circle time and then we proceeded with the experiment.

We began by pouring the milk into the dish. Then the children took turns to drop food colouring into the milk. After that, we added a drop of dish washing liquid in the milk whereby the children were amazed to see the milk move and mix with the colours.

The children also learnt the milk is made from fats and when the dish washing liquid is added, it separates the fats from the milk hence a reaction occurs, making the food colouring swirl around.

For this experiment, the children took responsibility by assisting the teachers with the set up and helping to put the materials away after completion. Through this learning experience, all the children were given the opportunity to take part in this experiment irrespective of their age group. This gave the children a sense of belonging as all of them were actively involved in the learning, by playing various roles and accepting various responsibilities through their participation.

Through this learning, the children explored something new and also gained an understanding about the chemical reaction that took place, hence enhancing their science knowledge. The children also understood the reason behind the name “Magic Milk” after watching the science experiment.

We will continue to implement new experiments in the classroom to build the children’s knowledge around science.
